The course was reasonably quiet over the weekend, with a number of members away on a bus trip, while others were playing in tournaments at other clubs in the Wairarapa.
Saturday's competition was a stableford round.
In the first group, both Terry Fleet and Neville Biel finished on 39 points, while Shane Stewart and Ngaire Graham both had 36 points. But the scoring was much hotter in the second group, with Kevin Gibbs needing 44 points to head off Chris Paine on 43 points for the top placing, but then there was a gap back to Alan Biel on 36 points.
The Lukies Lucky Last prize went to Mark Logan with 27 points.
The Solway Pie Shop nearest to the pin went to Niusila Faaiuaso, and Shane Stewart took the Mitre 10 one on the third hole, Arona Solomon took the McAuley's Transport one on the sixth, and Graeme Dick turned the remaining three the Solway Butchery one on the eighth, the Alister Bruce Affordable Sheds one on the 10th and the Dinah and Deb Keats Professionals Real Estate one on 17, into a benefit.
Sunday's weather was not conducive to golf, and no members even took to the course.
The Monday competition was another stableford round, and it saw Arona Solomon take the honours with a mere 47 points, a tally that is sure to attract the attention of the handicapper. Ron Hutcheson took the runners up spot on 42 points, which was just one better than Shane Stewart and Paul Beech. Both Lance Duckett and Arona Solomon scored holes in two.
On Tuesday, the veterans group played in a bisque par competition. The best score of the day was that of Daphne Jordan, with her score of 10 up comfortably giving her top billing in the second ladies group, with Betty Loader the runner up on 7 up, followed by Irene Phelps on 4 up. In the first group, Pat Gard had a score of 7 up, with the runners up spot being shared by Maria Lauvi, Yvonne Allsworth and Jean Bayly on 4 up.
The best of the men was Meki Lauvi on 9 up, which was in the first men's group.
The runners up were Fred Brittain, Alic Foreman and Doug Simpson on 6 up.
Syd Whittington led the second group on 7 up, which was one better than Lin Jordan, while Bevan Hefferen and Bruce Wilson both finished on four up.
The ladies nearest to the pins on both the third and sixth holes went to Pat Gard, while the men's one on the sixth went to Doug Simpson and the seventh to Meki Lauvi. There were no holes in two for the day.
Some members have been investing in new clubs recently. While it may not be current, the following quote from Robert Browning is still quite appropriate: "The trouble that most of us find with the modern matched sets of clubs is that they don't really seem to know any more about the game than the old ones did!"
While on the subject of quotes, the following one from Walter Hogan took my fancy. "Every golfer can expect to have four bad shots in a round, and when you do, just put them out of your mind.
This, of course, is hard to do when you've had them and you're not even off the first tee." I am sure that I can name more than one member who would agree with that. And of course, the four bad shots would be much higher by the end of the round if they persevered long enough to play the full round!
Next week's competition for the veterans will be the final round of the Haddon Donald Trophy for the year. This coming weekend has the men playing the Brockett and Captains Trophies over both days, while for the ladies will be a LGU round. On both days, the club competition will be a medal round.
Sunday week has the club holding the Copthorne Solway Park Resort Wairarapa Open Men's Fourball Best Ball Tournament. The entry sheet for the tournament is in the club house foyer.
