Masterton-based Giants will be aiming to keep their hopes of making the top four playoffs for the Inter-City men's softball series for the very first time alive when they play a double header tomorrow.
They will meet Porirua and Kapiti, and assistant coach Russell Thompson is optimistic that two wins there will be enough to keep them in the reckoning for a top four place.
"We might need other results to go our way as well, but the competition is so tight that can easily happen," he said.
Thompson believes Giants are capable of beating both Porirua and Kapiti, with the depth in their batting being seen as a major attribute.
"We have a number of batters who have the power and skill to put the ball over the fence, and if one or two of them do the business then we'll be hard to stop," he said.
Thompson emphasised too the importance of Giants backing up their pitchers in the field, an area in which young short stop Ryan Shannahan has been a standout.
"These are the sort of games where just one error in the field can be the difference between winning and losing," he said. " We have to be rock solid there."
