A giant squid measuring about eight metres long - including tentacles - was found floating off the coast of Kaikoura near Shark's Point this morning by Christchurch builder Jack Osikai.
Friend Graeme Dasler was out in his own boat when Mr Osikai called him over for a look.
"As soon as I got within 10 to 15 yards I saw what was in the water. Very interesting. I've never seen one before."
He says he'd never seen a squid so big before and it had obviously been dead for awhile.
"For sure. I'd grabbed hold of a tentacle on it and it virtually just crushed in the hand so that was enough."
