KEY POINTS:
Q: The other week the bus lane from Esmonde Rd to the city was closed on Monday. I phoned Transit, who said the contractor had forgotten to open the lane, but that it would be open the next day, which it was, but on Wednesday it was closed again. Is there any way that the public can be told that the bus lane is closed, so that we can make alternative arrangements?
S. Profitt, Milford.
A: Transit says, sorry, S. Profitt. Normally these closures are advertised well in advance but on this occasion, it was a last-minute decision by the contractor. In the event an overnight closure like this is required again, the contractor has promised to tell Transit, who will tell the public.
Q: Heading west on Church St in Onehunga, the road becomes very narrow between Captain Springs Rd and Galway St. The problem is worsened when cars park on both sides of the road. Are there any plans to widen this very busy road?
Isaac Broome, Auckland.
A: No plans for this end of Church St, no. But the council is investigating the possibility of widening Church St between Captain Springs Rd and Neilson St, east of your stretch.
Q: Recently a dangerous new driving tactic has really taken off on our roads. It is the practice of making a U-turn at an intersection, when a driver decides they want to go back the way they have just come. I wondered, is it an offence under the Road Code?
Charlie McInman, Birkenhead.
A: The Road Code states that you are normally allowed to make a U-turn, as long as the road is clear in both directions and it is safe to do so. Of course, if a 'No U-turn' sign is present, then it is an offence. And drivers should always indicate, ensure that they have enough room to make the turn, and don't create a hazard.
