Two German teenagers were killed after a beech tree fell on their car as they were driving, an accident which police say was caused by "no fault" of theirs.
They named the two 19-year-olds as Julia Mayer and Kathrin Schmitt.
Police said in a statement that they were traveling north on the Te Anau-Milford Highway near Cascade Creek in Fiordland about 4.30pm Friday when a beech tree fell and struck their car.
"Investigating police would like to point out that that there was absolutely no fault on behalf of either Ms Mayer or Schmitt that contributed to this tragic accident."
One of of the women died at the scene while firefighters used extraction gear to get the other woman out. She was taken to hospital in a critical condition but later died.
