KEY POINTS:
Police have released the name of a German tourist who was killed in a crash in Rotorua yesterday.
Klaus Jakob, 44, was walking across Te Ngae Road at around 8am when he was hit, smashing the car's windscreen before landing on the road behind it.
He was taken to Rotorua Hospital's intensive care unit but died within hours of arriving.
The accident occurred at a known blackspot which has seen four people killed over the last decade. Efforts have been made to make it safer with a speed camera and median strip installed in recent years.
Bay of Plenty road policing manager Inspector Kevin Taylor told The Daily Post it appeared yesterday's accident was different to the others.
He said an enormous amount of engineering had taken place there in response to other crashes and it was a well-designed and engineered piece of road.
