Every year hundreds of school pupils prepare exhibits for Genesis Energy regional science and technology fairs.
Local intermediate and secondary schools choose projects for entry into the 23 fairs.
From those fairs, between 35 and 40 of the best projects are chosen for the national science and technology fair, also sponsored by Genesis.
This year's will be at the Excite Centre in Hamilton, from December 4-8.
Projects can cover any area of science and technology.
Past entrants have been wide-ranging, from Peter Lau's Subterranean Conduction to Sam Blackman and Richard Cowley's The Gut(ters) Of It, an invention making gutter cleaning more efficient.
The awards include travel to the London Youth Science Forum for the winner of the Genesis Power Award, the IPENZ Travel Award, with a prize of travel to Singapore to the Nanyang Technology and Engineering Research Programme as well as several education scholarships.
The fairs are coordinated by the Royal Society of New Zealand (RSNZ).
