The building which could arguably be termed the seat of power in Masterton was plunged into darkness yesterday.
Masterton District Council was without power all day and may well be for a day or two yet due to a break in a power cable linking into the Chapel St building from the opposite side of the road.
Council's spokesman Sam Rossiter-Stead said good back-up systems prevented the loss of stored information on computers and the power had been restored by 2.30pm, bringing in a generator, at no cost to the council, housed on the back of a truck.
Powerco was immediately made aware of the power loss and confirmed there had been a low-voltage fault reported and that work was under way to rectify the problem.
Mr Rossiter-Stead said on his arrival at work he found his office to be one of the darkest in the building as he has no external windows but staff had been able to carry on working on most things until such time as the generator kicked in.
