State Highway 18 cleared after police officers shepherd Canada geese to safety

Police officers have managed to shepherd a “significant number” of geese off State Highway 18 on Auckland’s North Shore.

The road is now clear after police earlier urged motorists travelling near the Constellation Drive on-ramp to drive with caution.

“Police have been made aware of a significant number of Canadian geese on the road,” police said.

Police officers were deployed to try and clear the road.

“Officers managed to shepherd the birds back through the fence alongside the road,” they said.

“Police would like to thank motorists for their patience as we worked to clear the road.”

Last year, a sunbathing pig brought traffic to a halt on Auckland’s Northwestern Motorway.

Reggie, formerly known as Kevin Bacon, became an infamous fugitive after being on the run for nearly two weeks.

Authorities eventually caught up with him and he was taken to Taranaki, where he joined a sanctuary alongside five other pig friends.

Meanwhile, a seal also caused trouble for Auckland drivers last year.

It initially ran amok on Subway Rd, disturbing businesses before jumping on to Great South Rd and halting traffic and then entering people’s gardens on Coles Cres.

In 2017, a puppy playdate ended in chaos on the Auckland Harbour Bridge as a spooked pet made a dash for freedom on the Northern Motorway.

Frank, who was aged 2 at the time and suffered from separation anxiety, was socialising with a group of fellow French bulldogs at Point Erin in Herne Bay when he escaped from the pack around 3pm, startled by a boy running.

His owner, who asked not to be named, watched in horror as Frank ran on to the on-ramp and charged up the bridge’s northbound lane, startling motorists and bringing traffic to a stop.
