More than 100 people attended a camp in Motueka at the weekend learning how to take direct non-violent action against genetic engineering.
The camp was set up by the People's Moratorium Enforcement Agency, spokeswoman Lenka Rochford said.
Techniques taught included crop-pulling and blockading and barricading - to avoid being moved on at protests.
People attending the camp also received legal advice and learned how to take supermarket action and to deal with the police and media.
Ms Rochford said the campaigners rejected an "eco-terrorist" label.
It was time to take action such as crop-pulling because other protests had not worked, she said.
"We're not actively encouraging people to do anything. We explain how things are done and if they choose to use it that's their choice."
