A large number of people have gathered at Porirua's Holy Family Church for the funeral of Fitzgerald Risati.
Mr Risati was stabbed to death last weekend while celebrating his 24th birthday. His younger brother Risati Risati junior was also stabbed during the incident.
The two men arrested for the murder are believed to have gang connections, and there is a strong police presence at the funeral.
Community leaders have been patrolling the streets of Cannon's Creek ever since Mr Risati's murder, amidst talk of revenge, mostly via text message. A group of around 70 young Pacific Islanders arrived in the area from Newtown on Tuesday night, and had to be dispersed by police.
