The long awaited pou are being erected at both the southern and northern entrances to Masterton.
But the symbols they bear will remain covered until an official unveiling is held, the details of which should be finalised this week.
Ten-metre long poles will feature rusted steel symbols that have been selected after a long, involved consultation process.
An original idea to put up pou was decided, following a major signage study done by Craig Turvey of 3D Creative.
Masterton District Council gave the thumbs-up for the project in May 2013, after permission had been given by the New Zealand Transport Agency.
