Gas is flowing in central Wellington and the first reconnections have been made, utility Powerco says.
But some customers are likely to be in for a long wait as restoring supply "may take a considerable amount of time as each property will have varying levels of work required", the company said.
Gas has been cut to about 1000 central Wellington businesses since Wednesday, forcing some to close, restaurants to downsize menus and hotels to shift guests.
A blast of water and gravel from a burst water main into the gas network caused the problem.
Powerco Network Service delivery manager Stephen Nicholls said gas was flowing in the network and crews of gas fitters and plumbers were moving through the restored areas.
Mr Nicholls said the company's priorities were to ensure the network was safe and secure and to restore supply to all affected properties as soon as possible.
Among areas to have gas restored are the restaurant and bar area of Courtney Place and at the other end of the city the Backbencher Hotel.
Mr Nicholls said the company was aiming to connect as many properties as possible by the end of today.
Gas fitters would progressively visit every property affected, checking the gas meter or meters for damage, replacing or repairing any damaged meters and removing any water from the system.
Gas would then be restored and pilot lights relit.
Mr Nicholls said Powerco was aware consumers were asking questions about compensation and accountability.
But the company was focused on restoring gas to customers.
"The issue of compensation is complicated as it appears the water main has smashed through a metal pipe and our plastic pipe and flooded the network."
"We realise that compensation is an issue which needs to be addressed. We have been in discussions with our underwriters and a loss adjuster has been appointed and will establish a process through which any claims will be considered."
He said affected customers should contact their insurance companies first if they are considering compensation claims.
