A street in central Te Puke has been closed off as emergency services deal with a gas leak.
A fire communications spokeswoman said they were called to Beatty Ave about 11.25am to reports of the leak.
A contractor working in the area is believed to have ruptured a main, she said.
A reporter at the scene said there was a strong smell of gas in the area and firefighters had blocked the street off from Jellicoe St to Queen St.
The rupture appeared to have happened in a footpath, he said.
