Gas leak closes central Auckland street

A gas leak in central Auckland caused a street to be evacuated for just over an hour this morning.

Contractors accidentally ruptured a gas main with a digger in Elliott Street, said northern fire communications shift manager Dallas Ramsay.

"The street was partially evacuated until 11.50am. Fire crews assisted Vector with isolating the gas and checking gas levels," Ms Ramsay said.

The leak was not related to Saturday's gas explosion in Onehunga, she added.
