KEY POINTS:
A big hunt is on for gang members who fired on a pursuing police car after a drive-by shooting in Wanganui today.
Police were alerted at 1.40am when shots were fired at a house on Talbot Street, and a car was heard leaving.
Soon afterwards an officer in a patrol car saw a Ford Fairmont speeding toward the city and gave chase, Inspector Duncan McLeod said.
"A rear seat passenger was seen to lean from the vehicle and a firearm was discharged in the direction of the following police patrol," Mr McLeod said.
The officer was not hurt and the vehicle not damaged, he said.
