KEY POINTS:
When George Meaole Naea went looking for the rival gang members who assaulted his father, he set off a chain of events that would end in his dad's killing.
The Crown alleges that Naea, 19, and a group of about 40 fellow Juvenile Cryp Boys gang members and associates went to Flatbush, South Auckland, to get even with people they believed were members of the Gambino Familia and Penion Drive Boys gangs, understood to have carried out the assault on his father.
The ensuing October 2005 brawl resulted in cars and property being destroyed, and two men - Ernest Pio and Hanton Turia - being beaten to within an inch of their lives.
Naea - an Otahuhu College student at the time - faces a charge of attempting to murder Mr Pio and wounding Mr Turia with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
Another 11 men face charges of wounding the two victims with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
Prosecutor Kaine Patena yesterday told a jury at the High Court at Auckland that Naea and his associates had gathered at a Mt Wellington address known as "The Pad" throughout October 22, 2005, before leaving "in six to eight cars" to drive to the home of his father, Iulio Naea Kileopa, in Norrie Smith Ave, Flatbush, in the early hours of October 23.
Naea was not happy that his father drank with the "local lads", Mr Patena said.
His drinking sessions were often held in a park near his home, at the Dawson Rd shops, or at his house. Mr Kileopa had been assaulted while drinking in his home, in the days before the attack.
Naea had been furious when he saw damage the men had done to his father's home, and blamed it on the Penion Drive Boys.
During the attack, Naea allegedly beat Mr Pio with a baseball bat after seeing him walking down the street.
Mr Kileopa died in the hours following the attack. It is understood he was killed as retribution, and his death is the subject of a separate court hearing.
Naea was picked up next day by police for questioning about the attack - and the death of his father - and gave a statement to Detective Rob McKenzie.
Mr McKenzie told the court Naea had told him he had quizzed Mr Pio as to whether he was a member of the Penion Drive Boys. When Mr Pio denied membership, Naea struck him with a wooden baseball bat.
Naea allegedly told police he was "going for gold", beating Mr Pio repeatedly about the head. His co-accused are also alleged to have bashed Mr Pio and Mr Turia.
"I just wanted to get him back for what he did to my dad," Naea allegedly told police.
The trial is expected to run for four weeks.
