Four Ngaruawahia gang members are to appear in Hamilton District Court today after shots were fired on school grounds in the town yesterday.
Police were called to Bernard Ferguson Primary School around 3pm. No children had been on the premises, Waikato police said today.
The armed offender squad had been called in and the four men, all local gang members ranging in age from late teens to late-20s, were later arrested.
They were facing a variety of firearms charges.
Police said they had also recovered a number of firearms the men had been carrying. Drugs had also been found at a nearby house.
Police believed the incident was related to another one in the town last Friday night where a shot was fired through a car window, narrowly missing passengers in the vehicle.
Sergeant Greg Dunn of Ngaruawahia said there had been a fight in the main street that night and police believed the shooting was connected with that. No one had been arrested yet in relation to that incident.
