The MetService says southerly gales are expected to hit the South Island's east coast.
The gales may affect Cook Strait and eastern North Island areas tonight.
"This is the first real polar-chilled southerly outbreak of the year," said weather ambassador Bob McDavitt.
The winds would most likely ease tomorrow.
