Southwest gales hitting the eastern coasts from Otago to Wairarapa are expected to spread to coastal parts of Hawke's Bay and Gisborne this afternoon.
MetService forecaster Chris Noble said the strongest winds with gusts of 100km/h or more were affecting the Otago Peninsula and Banks Peninsula, but were expected to gradually ease late morning and during the afternoon.
For coastal Wairarapa, Mr Noble said winds should peak around the middle of the day with severe gale gusts possible in exposed places, before easing late afternoon and evening.
