KEY POINTS:
Gale force winds of up to 150km an hour are set to batter exposed parts of Auckland, the Kamai Ranges, Gisborne, Marlborough Sounds and Wellington.
Gale winds are also forecast for Taranaki as well as the central North Island plateau, the Coromandel Peninsula and the Bay of Plenty tomorrow.
Metservice forecaster Ian Miller said a deepening low will move over Nelson and Marlborough as an active cold front sweeps over northern and central New Zealand.
Mr Miller said the gale winds will be severe in eastern areas of Gisborne and Marlborough.
He said squally gales will continue into Wednesday hitting the Buller region, the West Coast and western Nelson. Hawkes Bay and the central North Island will also continue to experience strong winds.
Mr Miller said up to 200ml could fall in the Tararua Ranges and up to 150ml in the hilly country around Taranaki and Lake Taupo.
He said there will also be significant amounts of rain for the Waikato, the Marlborough Sounds and the ranges of Nelson.
Mr Miller said the combination of wind and rain has the potential to damage trees, powerlines and insecure roofs. He said boat owners should check their moorings.
