The angry mum of Bruce Emery's teenage stabbing victim is furious no one told her he was being released from prison.
Leanne Cameron was staggered when the Herald on Sunday told her that Emery will walk free in the next few days less than two years after fatally stabbing her 15-year-old son Pihema Cameron.
"Holy hell, I am gutted with New Zealand justice. This is disgusting," Cameron said yesterday.
"He didn't even serve half his sentence. So he can kill a kid and get away with it."
"He's white and me and my boy we are brown...That's how it works."
Father-of-three Emery, 52, armed himself with a knife and chased Pihema and another youth for 300m after he caught him tagging the garage door of his Manurewa home in Auckland in January 2008. During the struggle Pihema was fatally stabbed.
Emery, a businessman, claimed he was acting in self-defence.
Emery was charged with murder but found guilty of manslaughter at his High Court trial in December 2008. He was sentenced to four years, three months' jail.
Emery has told the Parole Board he will not be returning to Manurewa. He intends living in another part of New Zealand.
As part of his parole conditions Emery must take psychological counselling, and not go back to Manurewa.
Cameron, who now lives in Queensland, Australia, said she was angry the Parole Board had not let her or other family members know Emery was being released.
Parole Board spokeswoman Sonja de Frieze said the Cameron family had been told they needed to register as victims to be part of the parole process.
"In this particular case the victims chose not to. The victims were contacted a number of times, and asked to register, so they could be involved in the process.
"It's deeply regretful they chose not to register," de Frieze said.
Cameron said she had not been contacted and had believed that her sister Tania's details left with Victim Support at the time of her son's death was sufficient for her to be contacted by the Parole Board.
"I haven't been approached at all, nor has Pihema's dad or my sister. No one. That is absolutely disgusting. The whole Parole Board is bulls...t. There is no fricking justice," she said.
Cameron had only one message for Emery: "My words to him are 'go to hell'. I want him to burn in hell'."
In its decision the Parole Board said Emery posed little risk to re-offending.
The board said its role was not to decide when an offender has served a sufficient period of his sentence.
Cameron said Emery should have received more than a four year, three month sentence.
"Man, you get caught drink-driving you get done longer for that.
"Pihema didn't hurt anybody. He didn't kill anybody but Emery did. He went after those boys and killed my son...then he only gets manslaughter.
"He ran 330m chasing those boys...and with a knife who does that? That is ridiculous."
Cameron said she would never forgive Emery.
Cameron said while Emery could go back to his family, nothing would ever be the same for her.
"Pihema is never coming back to us."
Emery's mother said yesterday she was glad "he's back for Christmas".
