Further charges likely after beaten man dies

A man is expected to appear in court today after a Northland man died yesterday following a Far North beating.

The 54-year-old victim was found unconscious at a property north of Kaitaia shortly before midday on Sunday.

He was admitted to Kaitaia Hospital, then transferred to Whangarei Hospital where he died yesterday.

A 31-year-old had been charged with assault but more serious charges may be laid, police said.

Police would not comment on a possible motive for the attack, or whether a weapon was used.

The victim's name would not be released until relatives had been informed.
