A blaze in a furniture and bedroom warehouse in Thames, at the foot of the Coromandel Peninsula, is now under control.
People believed to have been inside the building had now been accounted for, Northern Fire Communications shift manager Mau Barbara said.
The fire started in the warehouse at 11.30am.
Fire fighters were now damping down hot spots, he said.
