A funeral was held yesterday for a 22-month-old boy who died after being run over by a four-wheel-drive vehicle.
Kolomatangi Kailahi died in Ruakaka, Northland, about 5.10pm on Monday.
He had been riding a tricycle in the driveway when the tragedy happened.
His tangi was held at Takahiwai Marae, Ruakaka.
Ruakaka police Sergeant Murray Van Der Veeken said police were still investigating the incident.
"A 22-month-old boy was riding his three-wheeled trike behind a four-wheel-drive when he was run over as the driver backed out.
"Ambulance drivers attended and could not resuscitate him at the scene," Mr Van Der Veeken said.
A St John's spokesman said that by the time ambulance staff had arrived Kolo had died of suspected head injuries.
Ann Weaver, director of Starship Hospital's child injury prevention service, Safekids, said from September 2004 to May 2005 six children had died as a result of such incidents.
On average two patients a month were admitted to the hospital as a result of a home driveway injury.
