A dog that walked around the South Island to raise money for cancer and featured in a Herald on Sunday story last week about the cost of dog registration has died in a house fire.
Seven-year-old border collie Rapid died after an electrical fault caused a fire in the home of Island Bay man Mike Butler early last Sunday morning.
Butler and his two other dogs were not home, but Rapid was in the house recovering from surgery.
Butler walked 2325km around the South Island over 10 weeks last year and raised $23,700 for the Cancer Society.
He was joined by a shoe-clad Rapid. Another of his dogs, Ella, walked about half the journey.
