At this library, no one will tell visitors to be quiet.
Opening today, the Botany Library in Manukau City is full of "comfortable people space", says Chris Szekely, manager of Manukau Libraries. Users can talk with one another, use innovative technology, have a snack and, of course, read.
With colourful, modern decor, the place looks more like an art gallery or internet cafe than a library. Some rooms are equipped with sound domes, television screens, lounge chairs and neon lights.
"[We have] steered away from it being the traditional study space," Mr Szekely says.
Instead, the library is modelled on a retail store, where librarians mingle among library visitors to help locate information.
Most of the rooms are designed to encourage interaction, with the exception of "the peaceful place", a green-walled room with plenty of windows, which promotes quiet reading. It's a mix that librarians say will indulge both young and old visitors.
Located at the Botany Town Centre, "the idealibrary" comes at a cost of $3.2 million to ratepayers.
Along with computers and video-conferencing equipment, the library is wired with new technology that allows guests to self-check their books and helps librarians file books away quickly. Each book has its own microchip.
"I can't wait for people to start using it," says Kim Taunga, the head librarian. "There will be something for everybody."
Ms Taunga won't have to discipline visitors for eating while they read. Here, drinks are encouraged - there's a cafe attached to the library.
Fun day
This Saturday is Family Fun Day at Botany Library. From 10am-3pm kids can hear storytellers and music, have their faces painted, or check out the library's selection of books.
