The driver of a truck and trailer unit carrying trusses and framing from Masterton to Napier had a lucky escape from injury after the vehicle careered off SH2 near Eketahuna yesterday.
As the unit came onto a bridge about 1km south of the township another truck coming from the opposite direction also came onto the bridge making it a tight squeeze for both vehicles to negotiate it.
The driver said the trailer unit had clipped the side of thebridge and the vehicle hadleft the road and ploughed its way down an embankment into a paddock.
Emergency services were called out to the incident about 9.30am and it took workmen some time to get the truck and trailer back up onto the roadway none the worse for wear.
None of the load was tipped off in the incident and the driver, who suffered only a sore arm and finger was attended to by Eketahuna St John.
