The Wairarapa Sports Education Trust are expecting a full house for their annual sports dinner to be held at the Genesis Recreation Centre on Saturday, September 27.
More than 40 tables have already been booked which leaves just a few more still available and a capacity crowd of 500 already seems assured.
The dinner has been a highlight of the local sporting calendar over the past few years and this year's should be no exception with former All Black and New Zealand rugby sevens star Eric Rush as the guest speaker.
"Rushy" has won himself a huge reputation for his witty and stimulating addresses and he should be an excellent follow up to former Wallaby Peter Fitzsimons who was such a big hit 12 months ago.
Complementing Rush's address will be a short talk from Robyn Wong, a former New Zealand Olympian in mountain biking who has strong local connections.
She also attended the Beijing Olympics as a liaison officer-motivator for our national team.
Rounding out the evening will be the usual fund raising auction, much of it involving sporting memorabilia.
Funds raised by the WSET are utilised in many ways; for the building of excellence in sport, for the provision of quality coaching and coaching programmes, for the retention of locally-raised elite sports people to become involved in development and promotion work in the Wairarapa community and for increasing participation in sporting programmes.
This year the WSET have offered full support to a new summer sports promotion which will begin in Masterton the day after the dinner, Sunday, September 28.
"Join the Club-Create a Habit" is designed to get more people active through sport through flexible rules, flexible times, family opportunities and social engagement.
The venues for the September 28 programme have not been finalised but most of the activity will take part in Masterton's central park and recreation centre area.
A similar programme will operate in Carterton on Sunday, October 5 and in Featherston on Sunday, October 12.
