A ship has hit a wharf while berthing at Ports of Auckland today.
Shortly before noon the Seafuels vessel Awanuia made contact with Wynyard wharf as it was berthing, a ports spokesman said. It was travelling at slow speed, because it was berthing.
There was some relatively minor damage to the concrete wharf deck and the bow of the Awanuia above the waterline.
No-one was injured and no fuel was spilled, the spokesman said.
A witness told the Herald there was "significant damage to the bow" of the bunker ship.
The witness, who wanted to remain anonymous, believed the ship lost power on approach to the wharf and "effectively T-boned the wharf, suffering significant damage to the ship's bow above the waterline".
Photographs supplied to the Herald show a sizeable hole in the ship's bow where it crashed into the wharf.
