A teenager set himself on fire when he lit a naked flame so he could see what he was doing as he was siphoning fuel from his car in Randwick Park, Manurewa, last night.
The 19-year-old was taken to Middlemore Hospital with burns over much of his body, and was in a serious condition.
Fire Service spokesman Scott Osmond said it appeared that "because it was dark, he couldn't see what he was doing very well so he decided to light either a match or a lighter".
