Things have just gone from bad to worse for Wairarapa senior men's cricket captain Sam Curtis.
He was to skipper Central Districts A in matches against their Wellington counterparts next week but they have been cancelled.
And with no national tourney being played for the A teams either this season Curtis admits to a feeling of being short changed.
"It's all happened in the year I was captain,............it's very frustrating", he said
Adding to Curtis's frustrations has been the disappointing results returned by Wairarapa on the provincial circuit this season with their Hawke Cup elimination programme being completed without even one victory being achieved.
Which is a far cry from 12 months earlier when they came close to earning themselves a Cup challenge.
Curtis says indifferent weather, the continuous battles over the state of the Queen Elizabeth Park oval pitch in Masterton and a club programme which provided solely for limited-overs matches before the Christmas break have all played their part in Wairarapa failing to build on the progress made in 2008-09.
He pointed out it was now February and he himself had only had the five bats at club level, none of which provided the opportunity to spend any great length of time at the crease. Other specialist batsmen in the Wairarapa side were in exactly the same boat.
Curtis now believes local cricket administrators got it wrong by opting to play only one-day cricket before Christmas but he is quick to emphasise clubs had all voted for that system and therefore everybody had to accept the blame.
"Our batsmen are proving the point that you need time at the crease to get yourself mentally right to bat for long periods............too many are getting out because they are trying to force the pace rather than playing each ball on its merits," he said.
Wairarapa completes their representative programme for this season when they contest the Chapple Cup limited-overs tourney in Wanganui this coming weekend. There are just three teams in their Cave Cup pool because of Marlborough withdrawing and Wairarapa will meet Horowhenua-Kapiti on Saturday for the right to play Wanganui in Sunday's final.
With three of their main strike bowlers, Seth Rance, Hayden Spierling and Daniel Ingham, unavailable for the two days and a fourth, Dean Van Deventer, unable to front up on Sunday Wairarapa will be somewhat depleted in that department.
Curtis says that fact will place extra responsibility on the batsmen to come up trumps as big scores would help ease the pressure on the bowlers.
"We have to bat well, it's as simple as that", he said. "Do that and we are a chance, fail and we will very probably be also rans.".
Frustrations of season continue for captain
