But that could soon be considerable reduced.
Transport chiefs are working on road signs which will give Auckland motorway users a guide to how long their journeys will be.
The NZ Transport Agency publication Pathways said the project, which had been in development for about 18 months, would use high-tech sensors to make the estimates.
These would be displayed on road signs which would be updated every minute.
The project, planned for the southern motorway, would give drivers an idea of whether the level of traffic would mean a journey from the city to Mt Wellington, for example, would take five minutes or 30.
NZTA did not give any indication when the signs would be erected.
