KEY POINTS:
A truckload of frozen chickens ended up in the sea just south of Kaikoura early today.
Inspector John Doherty said the truck and trailer unit drove off the road just before 4am.
The driver was trapped in the cab but the cab was not in the water and he was freed after a short period of time.
He suffered moderate injuries and was admitted to Kaikoura Hospital, Mr Doherty said.
Police were investigating the cause of the accident.
