The bitterly cold temperatures that have left kiwis shivering for the past few mornings are likely to subside throughout the rest of the week, forecasters say.
MetService meteorologist, Stephen Glassey said cold temperatures felt across most the country for the past few mornings were to be expected.
"We have had some frost in both islands the last couple of mornings, it's pretty normal for this time of year because it is winter, but it's looking a lot warmer today and for the next couple of days, due to the strong northwest winds developing over the country."
Mr Glassey said a front would move over the South Island today and slowly move north, bringing heavy rain to western areas of the south, and strong gusty winds further east.
"The front is still yet to come on, it's going to move onto the South Island later today."
