KEY POINTS:
It could be crunchy under foot for veterans marching at dawn services on Anzac Day tomorrow with frosts forecast for much of the South Island.
MetService forecaster Bob McDavitt said the weather would be fine for much of the country.
"On Friday morning dawn air temperatures are expected to be below 4 degrees for much of the South Island and this is cold enough for a ground frost to occur.
He said temperatures in Queenstown and Wanaka could plummet to as low as zero degrees while areas from Taupo southwards were likely to be in single digits.
The fine spell would not hold for the entire long weekend, Mr McDavitt said.
"The anticyclones are not hanging around as long as the did over summer and the next trough will be moving onto New Zealand from the Tasman Sea on Saturday and Sunday, bringing a new episode of wind and rain especially to northern and western.
