Frosts that hit many parts of the country this morning were more intense than usual for this time of year, according to the MetService.
Five degree frosts were reported by MetService weather stations at airports in Nelson, Paraparaumu, and Hamilton and also at sites in Levin and Christchurch.
A six degree frost was reported from Henderson in West Auckland.
"The frost is biting earlier than normal," MetService spokesman Bob McDavitt said.
"The intensity of these frosts is more typical of mid-winter rather than early June.
"We had ideal frost making conditions with the combination of very cold southerly winds followed by a calm clear night."
Mr McDavitt said further frosts were likely this week.
