Wairarapa's racing fraternity got real value for money at an awards night on Thursday with a highly entertaining guest speaker and a chance to meet the new chief executive of New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing.
International trainer Graeme Rogerson let the cat out of the bag as he spoke about some of the highlights of his hugely successful career in New Zealand, Australia and Asia and Malcolm Holmes, the new NZTR chief executive was able to reacquaint himself with his old turf.
Mr Holmes is an old boy of both Hadlow Preparatory School and Rathkeale College and returns to New Zealand Racing after a stint as CEO at the Brisbane Turf Club in Australia.
The Horse of the Year Award predictably went to outstanding Opaki galloper Fritzy Boy, jointly owned by Greytown farmer John Jury and the gelding's trainer Alby MacGregor.
Fritzy Boy also won the Sprinter of the Year title.
Highly successfully Opaki training combination James Wallace and Noel Waddell were named Trainers of the Year with the stable star Soph winning Stayer of the Year.
Owner of the Year went to Jim Wallace who owns a string of good gallopers including Soph and Broodmare of the Year went to Double Babu who left Mac O'Reilly.
Stacey Dougan got the award for leading Opaki trackrider and Jenny Armstrong won the Tauherenikau trackrider award.
Special awards were presented to both Frank Stammers and Don Fuge.
Both train at Tauherenikau and enjoyed a lucrative winter season.
