The annual President's team versus the Club Captain's team competition was played last Saturday at Carterton.
With the members of each team allocated in a completely arbitrary manner (actually in their order of arrival ) it is, perhaps, a bit of a wonder that the event engenders any rivalry at all.
However, for some reason, each year's event is played in a spirit of friendly rivalry and this year was no exception.
It pains me to admit that the Captain's team won the day by a handsome margin.
MEN - SATURDAY:
The individual results of the day were, in each of the two divisions, remarkably alike.
In the low handicap division David Sadler won the day with 41 stableford points from Craig Wilson, on 40.
Lyn Evans took third place with his 39 point score from both David Wills and Matt Casey, on 38.John Lett filled sixth spot with his 36 point total.
In the higher handicap division 41 points also was best, that score being posted by Frank Delaney. George Rink, with 40 points, was second and Graham Hutchby was on his own in third place with 38.
Both John Braiden and R. O. Bentley scored 36 and both Bernie O'Brien and Ash Braggins scored 34.
Chris Ranish marked the day by scoring an eagle three on par five hole number 5, while men to score holes in two were Matt Casey, Lance Sayer and Pat Carew.
The Marquis of Normanby Hotel Men's Nearest the Pin contest was won by one of the youngest members in the field, Adam Brunton, while the men's "All Teed Up" ball was won by Lyn Evans.
WOMEN - SATURDAY:
Competing as part of the President's / Captain's match the women's competition was won by Shirley Carew with 37 points from Corrie van Zanten, on 36.
Third slot was claimed by Nadine Jansen with 34 points while four players - June Prince, Lesley Sadler, Kate Keen and Chris Taylor - all returned 33 point scores.
The ladies nearest the pin contest was won by Anne Ross and the "All Teed Up" ball for the ladies went to Nadine Jansen.
Four women scored holes in two - Marion Matheson, Yvonne Baylis, Shirley Carew and Anne Ross.
VETERANS - TUESDAY:
The fourth and last round of the Jack Cross Memorial Winter Plate was played by the veterans on Tuesday, August 9.
Prior to play starting Trevor Clayton held a narrow lead over Garry Smith but, on Tuesday, Garry was able to improve his score by three holes while Trevor was unable to increase his score.
As a result Garry pipped Trevor by a single hole and is now the holder of the Memorial Plate for 2005.
This is the second year in a row that Garry has won this event.
The day's competition was won, in fine style, by Tom Bingham with his score of plus 9. Garry Smith took second place with plus 7 followed by no less than six players, all on plus 6. They were Matt Casey, Geof Rolls, Chris Connor, Bob Walker, Trevor Clayton and Hugh Rolls
.
WOMEN - WEDNESDAY:
Round 4 of the Coyle Cup was played on Wednesday, August 3, with both Vicki Bain and Caral Rink returning 2 up scores, Vicki getting the nod on countback.
Sue Braiden was on her own on 1 up in third place with both Sue Ross and Val Willis finishing square. Both Judy Wright and Pauline Craig came in 1 down.
The only hole in two of the day was scored by Corrie van Zanten and the "All Teed Up" ball went to Lesley Sadler.
Longest drive competitions were won by Corrie van Zanten, Lesley Sadler and Flo Watkins.
FOOTNOTE:
Very often the trophies within a golf club embody the history of the club in a very permanent way.
One of the Carterton Club trophies even predates the club being located in the Carterton area.
But the Jack Cross Memorial Plate, competed for by the veterans, is a relatively recent trophy, having been donated to the Club in 1998 by Mr and Mrs Jim Douglas.
Quite recently I heard Jack Cross referred to as "Gentleman Jack" and that would certainly accord with my view of a player who made me very welcome at the Carterton club some 12 years ago.
It is not a bad way to be remembered, is it!
