KEY POINTS:
Franklin Rd in Freemans Bay lit up like a Christmas tree on Saturday night when local residents Thelma Cash and Violet Lewis switched the street's now-famous Yuletide lights on.
For the 14th year in a row, residents have decorated their houses in elaborate Christmas lights and decorations, providing a spectacular display for everybody to enjoy.
Householder Cally McWha said last night that the lights looked fantastic.
"We don't have a lot of lights on our house ... but in the turret of our house we have a Santa Claus with a waving arm."
Ms McWha said the road would get busier with sightseers as Christmas drew near.
Meanwhile, a Christmas tree nearly 20m tall was lifted into place yesterday in preparation for Saturday's Coca-Cola Christmas in the Park concert at the Auckland Domain.
The event, which has been running since 1994, will take place from 7.30pm to 10.15pm and is expected to attract about 200,000 people.
Organisers are promising a spectacular evening featuring a stellar cast of stars from stage and screen, as well as exciting talent discovered in nationwide auditions held this year.
There will be 31 acts in total, including local and international performers.
Highlights will include award-winning band Opshop and 2004 NZ Idol winner Ben Lummis.
And of course Father Christmas will be there.
