Burglars who threw a heavy metal plate through the window of a Hamilton pharmacy early today were caught shortly after they fled with first-aid kits, fragrance and cold sachets.
Police said when a heavy metal plate from a fire hydrant was thrown through the window of the pharmacy in Urlich Ave shopping centre in south Hamilton suburb Melville, it activated a burglar alarm.
The burglars climbed through the broken window shortly after 1am and took bottles of fragrances, first aid kits and a packet of Lemsip sachets, Senior Sergeant Craig Taylor said.
A police dog tracked them a short distance but it was apparent they had fled in a car, Mr Taylor said.
When a Mazda 323 car was later stopped by a police patrol, a search uncovered stolen goods from the pharmacy and several knives and bayonets.
Three adults and two juveniles were arrested.
