A four-year-old girl has been airlifted to Dunedin Hospital in a critical condition after being hit by a car at Jack's Point, near Queenstown.
Police have cordoned off Jack's Point Rise after they were called to reports of a child struck by a vehicle at around 11.15am.
Detective Grant Miller, who is investigating the incident, said the child was walking with her mother when she was hit by a black Subaru four-wheel-drive this morning.
The driver of the vehicle is believed to be a woman, but Miller could not comment on the details around what happened in the lead up to the collision because "police are still trying to piece that together''.
He described the child's injuries as "serious''.
