While the A4 cabriolet aims to mix substance with style, Audi is set to push the TT quattro even further into the sporting arena with a 3.2-litre V6 version.
Set for New Zealand launch late next year, the TT V6 is powered by a 184kW/320Nm version of the 3.2-litre engine that's used in a number of Volkswagen Group vehicles, including the Beetle RSi and Touareg off-roader. The current TT 1.8T quattro makes 165kW/280Nm.
Audi is claiming major performance and economy advantages from the TT V6's new, motorsport-inspired, six-speed Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG). The DSG system employs twin clutches capable of activating two gears at once. While driving, one gear is fully engaged, but when the next change point approaches the car's shift-by-wire computer preselects the next ratio. The gearshifting process opens one clutch and closes the other simultaneously, resulting in seamless changes and uninterrupted traction.
Audi claims 0-100km/h in 6.4 seconds and average fuel consumption of 9.8 litres per 100km.
The DSG can also be operated in fully automatic mode, with either standard or sport settings.
The TT V6 also features an uprated braking system derived from the S4 super-sedan: floating calipers and ventilated discs all-round (334mm front, 265mm rear). As with the rest of the TT range, anti-lock/automatic assist brakes and Electronic Stability Program (ESP) is standard.
The more powerful TT is identified by its modified front apron, enlarged rear spoiler and titanium-coloured headlight trims.
Expect the new car to cost well over $100,000 - but don't expect a soft-top. For the time being, the model comes only as a coupe.
