Four Wairarapa men's hockey players have been included in national league squads for the 2008 season, the highest number ever for this region.
Dalefield forward Rowan Yeo will be part of the Wellington squad for the 10-day NHL tourney to be held in Auckland in September while playing for Central will be another Dalefield player in fullback Dane Lett.
Joining Lett in the Central line-up which essentially consists of players drawn from Manawatu, Hawke's Bay, Wanganui and Taranaki will be forward Jesse Workman and utility player Mark Scully, who now play for the University club in Manawatu but were part of the Dalefield line-up earlier in the season.
Further honours have also come Workman's way with his selection in the New Zealand Maori team to play at the Pacific Cup tourney in Fiji in November where the Kiwis will strike opposition from Papua-New Guinea, Australian Indigenous, New Zealand Indians and the host nation.
Workman is unsure as to what position he will play in that tourney as while he is usually in the forwards the Maori team is expected to include a number of current Black Caps and their positioning will decide his fate in that regard.
"I could find myself in the midfield but that's not a problem, I'm just thrilled to be there," Workman said yesterday.
This will be the first Pacific Cup tourney Workman has participated in but he did play for New Zealand Maori in matches against New Zealand Indians and New Zealand Juniors earlier this year, both of which ended in narrow defeats for an under-strength Maori side.
