KEY POINTS:
Four people are in Dunedin Hospital after two cars carrying 10 people crashed in the city overnight.
Acting Senior Sergeant Chris McLellan said a taxi van carrying seven passengers and a driver and a private van with one passenger and a driver collided at the intersection of Hillside Road and King Edward Street about 12.40am.
The impact demolished the traffic lights at the major south Dunedin intersection and left both vehicles badly damaged.
The taxi driver and one passenger were taken to Dunedin Hospital with serious injuries, while both occupants of the other van were also hospitalised. The passenger of the second van had to be cut from the vehicle by the Fire Service.
Police were investigating the crash, and it was not known whether alcohol was involved.
They wanted to hear from any witnesses, who could call on (03)4714800.
