Four people are in hospital with moderate or minor injuries after a helicopter crashed near Mt Ruapehu's Crater Lake yesterday.
Taumarunui police said the pilot walked down the mountain towards a skifield where he could get cellphone reception and called emergency services at 6.15pm, about 45 minutes after the crash.
