Four people were taken to Wanganui Hospital yesterday after a two-car collision at the intersection of SH1 and Calico Line about 2.15pm.
One couple, believed to be tourists, were travelling north. The man sustained serious chest injuries and a broken leg and was airlifted to Hospital, while his wife was taken by ambulance.
The driver of the other car and his wife were also taken by ambulance to hospital. All are in a serious but stable condition.
Two fire trucks from the Marton Volunteer Fire Brigade attended the accident and hosed debris off SH1. Vehicles travelling north were diverted from SH1 up Wings Line.
A fire truck was parked across Calico Line to allow the helicopter to land. At about 3.30pm a queue of trucks on SH1 stopped at the accident scene were given the all-clear to continue travelling north.
