KEY POINTS:
Four people have been admitted to hospital suffering burns and smoke inhalation after an apartment fire in Wellington this morning.
Fire communications shift manager David Meikle said the blaze broke out in one of two apartments in a two-storey building on Rahui Street in Strathmore around 6.45am.
"The top floor was well alight when the brigade arrived and everybody was out. However, four occupants have been taken to Wellington Hospital with burns and smoke inhalation."
Mr Meikle said the sizeable fire took 20 minutes to extinguish.
"It was going well, the first responding appliance could see it from some distance away," he said.
A fire safety officer would determine the cause of the blaze, he said.
