Four people were killed in weekend road accidents, with several others - including a 5-year-old boy - recovering in hospital.
Nicolos Agius, 28, died in hospital after the car he was travelling in hit a power pole on Symonds St in the central city around 8.50am on Saturday.
He was rushed to Auckland City Hospital in a critical condition.
His mother, Judith, told the Herald on Sunday the family decided to turn off her son's life support 12 hours later.
On Saturday evening in Tauranga, a 21-year-old man was killed when the car he was in rammed into a street sign after colliding with another vehicle at the intersection of Fifteenth Ave and Fraser St.

A man in his late 40s died after two cars collided head-on on the Mauku railway overbridge at Union Rd in Franklin shortly before 8.30pm on Saturday.
Patumahoe Volunteer Fire Brigade chief Paul Wallbutton said rescue tenders came from Pukekohe and Waiuku brigades to cut people out of the cars.
The Westpac rescue helicopter took one seriously injured patient, a 27-year-old woman with chest injuries and neck lacerations, to Middlemore Hospital. Two other injured people were taken there by ambulance.
In another smash around 4.20pm on Saturday, an elderly man was critically injured when the vehicle he was in hit another on State Highway 41 on the western shore of Lake Taupo. He died in Rotorua Hospital.
Two helicopters were needed at the crash, where heavy traffic was beginning to build.
Two passengers in the second vehicle - a mother and her 5-year-old son - were also flown to Rotorua Hospital with moderate to serious injuries.
Police northern communications said a young man last night remained in a critical condition in Middlemore Hospital after he was hit by a petrol tanker late on Friday night.
The 24-year-old had driven into a ditch on State Highway 2 in Maramarua in Waikato.
He appears to have stepped out of his vehicle and walked towards the road, where he was struck.
Police said alcohol appeared to have been a factor in the accident. They were also speaking to the uninjured driver of the tanker.
