Four people were killed on the roads at the weekend.
Two teenagers and a former soldier died after a horrific crash north of Tauranga on Friday night. Dylan Perkinson, 17, Vance Williams, 16, and former soldier and father of three Mark August Sydney, 44, died in the collision on State Highway 2 about 11.45pm.
All three were from Waihi. Mr Sydney was a former army lieutenant, who received a New Year's honour in 2007 for his work with the military police in Bosnia.
Two other teenagers, Brennan Mayor, 17, and Kane Stewart, 16, were seriously injured. Kane was last night in a stable but critical condition and Brennan was serious but stable. Both are in Waikato Hospital.
The Subaru Legacy Dylan Perkinson was driving appeared to have crossed the centre line into the path of Mr Sydney's car, police said.
Vance Williams was the front-seat passenger in the Subaru.
Waikato road policing manager Inspector Leo Tooman said it appeared alcohol, speed, driver inexperience and failure to drive to the conditions were factors.
A 22-year-old cyclist died on Saturday night in Karori, Wellington, after his bike and a car collided at the intersection of Makara and Arlington Rds about 11pm. He is expected to be named today.
